Christie & Co bring to market The Dragon’s Back, a picturesque country inn

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, is pleased to bring to market The Dragon’s Back, an historic country inn regarded as the ‘highest pub’ situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park, one of three national parks in Wales.

Set over two acres against a backdrop of the Black Mountains in the western end of the national park, with picturesque views of the surrounding mountain ranges and easy access to the beautiful valleys of the Rivers Wye and Usk, The Dragon’s Back is a popular base for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the Welsh countryside, whether it be hiking, cycling riding or by car.

The inn also benefits from nearby local attractions, which draw thousands of visitors to the area every year, including the picturesque towns of Talgarth, Hay-on-Wye and Brecon. Hay on-Wye is renowned for its second-hand bookshops and antiques centres, as well as the annual Literary Festival, whilst the thriving historic town of Brecon attracts visitors year-round and hosts a popular annual Jazz festival.

The original stone building which houses the main bar area is thought to date back over 300 years, originally serving as a hill farm before becoming a Cider House and a Coaching Inn and has been substantially extended over the years. The inn was named after the ridge leading from Castell Dinas, which can be seen from the Inn and accessed via one of the many popular footpaths.

The current owners purchased the business in 2008 and have made significant repairs, improvements, and upgrades such as the beer garden, in keeping with the charm and warmth of the period property. They have made the decision to sell in order to retire from the industry.

Mr Ahmed Abdullah comments, "Neither of us had any experience managing a hospitality business before we purchased The Dragon’s Back, however we have found it a very rewarding experience. Not only have we met and made friends with people from all over the world but at the same time we have been able to fully enjoy an excellent work-life balance. After all, it's pointless living in a stunning location if you never have the time or energy to take advantage of it. This really is a genuine sustainable lifestyle opportunity."

The on-site accommodation offering comprises four quaint bed & breakfast rooms with a separate entrance, a campsite featuring shepherd’s huts and Trekkers Bunkhouse, a converted barn made up of three bunk rooms.
The site also features a two-bedroom owners flat, making it the perfect site for an owner/operator seeking a lifestyle business in order to move to the countryside. The pub currently trades on Friday evenings and Saturdays only so there is an opportunity for a new owner to increase sales by looking to extend the opening hours.

Nicholas Calfe, Director at Christie & Co is handling the sale and comments, “This business would ideally suit a couple that are either already involved in outdoor activities or have a passion for the outdoors and wish to move away from the stresses of urban life and enjoy both a lifestyle and profitable business amongst beautiful mountain scenery.”

The Dragon’s Back is being marketed off an asking price of £595,000 on a freehold basis.
