Family run Herefordshire supermarket looking for new owner

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has brought to the market Ashby Stores, a local supermarket in the historic market town of Kington, North Herefordshire, close to the Powys border.

The Nisa branded supermarket comprises 4,500 sq ft of trading space and features two separate entrances, along with HGV loading bay, basement and external storage by way of an outbuilding.

Situated close to the popular walking path, Offa’s Dyke, Kington experiences high numbers of tourists and visitors passing through the area, providing additional custom for Ashby Stores.

The business has been owned and operated by the same family for the last 31 years and has built up a well established reputation in the town, with a loyal following in the community. Having been handed down from his father, Mike Ashby has run the store for 21 years with his wife and family and has now decided to sell in order to retire. He comments, “It was 31 years ago that my mother and father decided to leave London and take over the supermarket on the high street in Kington, a lovely and historic market town on the Herefordshire/Powys borders.

“Ten years later, Julie, my wife, was expecting our first child, Lucy, when we decided to leave our careers in law and teaching and make the move to the beautiful countryside of Herefordshire and take up the reins at the shop as my parents retired. Over the next two decades, with the help of our fantastic team of loyal and hard working staff, we have created some wonderful family memories and raised three daughters.

“After 21 years it is time for us to spend even more time exploring the Offa's Dyke path and beyond and give somebody else the chance to take over."

Stephen Bell, Senior Business Agent at Christie & Co is handling the sale and comments, “This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a well established and sizeable store that benefits from both local and tourist trade, thanks to the proximity to the Offa's Dyke trail. Suited for an experienced operator, hands-on owner operator or simply someone looking to take on a thriving lifestyle business in a picturesque part of the country, Ashby Stores presents an exciting opportunity to the market.”

The store is being marketed at £900,000 for the freehold interest, or £400,000 for the leasehold interest with annual rent of £55,000. There also three residential flats available by separate negotiation.
