Situated on the edge of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, this outstanding coaching inn has been owned by John and Claire Topham for the past 24 years and boasts 14 refurbished, luxury en-suite bedrooms, a welcoming bar and restaurant, a dining atrium, a cocktail lounge and a beautiful private hire and function room. Much of the building’s traditional features, which date back to the late 18th century, have been retained throughout, including stone walls, oak beams and a traditional fireplace which is showcased in the cocktail bar and function room.

Despite being closed when it came to market, the business attracted significant interest from a variety of purchasers and received multiple offers, before the preferred buyer, Sarah Morris was selected.

Previous owners, John and Claire Topham comment, “We have owned The General Tarleton for 24 very happy years and in that time, we have worked hard to establish its reputation and client base. In recent times however, we have focussed more and more on another project and felt that the time was right to step aside. We wish the new owner, Sarah and her team all the best and we are confident she will be a huge success.”

The new owner, Sarah Morris comments, “We are thrilled to have acquired such an iconic and well-known venue. The General Tarleton already has a fantastic reputation which we will be looking to improve upon even further. The pub is currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment and is set to open late Spring - lockdown and local restrictions pending – so regulars can still expect the same traditional charm, cosy rooms, welcoming hospitality, outstanding food and fine wines together with some exciting new changes.

“In addition to continuing with fine dining in the revamped restaurant, we will also be offering a more informal menu in our newly refurbished bar area,” Sarah continues. “The additional casual dining will be ideal to share with family and friends over a drink. We will also be offering a traditional Sunday lunch served throughout the afternoon so guests can dine at a time to suit.”

Mark Worley, Director in Christie & Co’s Hospitality team handled the sale. He adds,“The General Tarleton is well known across North Yorkshire and prior to closing, it was renowned for the quality of its food and picturesque surroundings. The number of offers received from prospective buyers illustrates the huge demand for rural hospitality businesses despite the ongoing pandemic. It’s a clear sign that the medium to long term future of the sector is still very healthy.”

The General Tarleton was sold on a freehold basis off an asking price of £850,000.
