Historic bed & breakfast in Weardale brought to the market

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has been instructed to sell Stanhope Old Hall, a 12th century Medieval manor house situated in the village of Stanhope in County Durham, known as the ‘Capital of Weardale.’

The charming village is set amongst the stunning landscape and fells of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Nestled between two moors beside the River Wear and on the coast-to-coast cycle route, the earliest reference to this Grade II* Listed property dates back to 1139.

Set in extensive grounds, the Bed & Breakfast boasts seven en suite letting rooms and a self-contained letting apartment, all recently refurbished while still retaining many of its original features, including its huge open fireplaces, original ancient doors, huge oak beams, stone walls, and staircases dating to the 16th century. Stanhope Old Hall also offers a guest bar/lounge, a sitting room, a grand dining hall and restaurant with seating for 35 guests. Externally guests can enjoy seating area to the front of the property and there is a large paddock capable of housing a marquee, ideal for hosting weddings and private events. The property also includes ample off-street parking and two bedroom owner’s accommodation.

Current owner, Diane Carter adds, “The business is still growing year on year and has gained a great reputation for both the B&B and the restaurant. It’s with a great deal of regret and sadness that we find ourselves having to part with what has become a wonderful home and thriving business. I know that whomever buys the Hall will get as much excitement and satisfaction from living and working in the hall as we have.”

The family run business is still relatively young, presenting further opportunities to expand. David Cash, Senior Agent at Christie & Co’s Newcastle office comments; “Stanhope Old Hall is a property that has been lovingly restored in recent years and is immaculately presented throughout. The business is still in its infancy and personal circumstances have led to Mrs Carter’s desire to sell. The business continues to grow and there are opportunities to expand by increasing trading hours, introducing private dining or advertising for more weddings. There is the option to simply occupy Stanhope Old Hall as a residential dwelling – and what a fantastic home it would make!”

The freehold as a trading business or with vacant possession is available through Christie & Co at an asking price of £995,000.
