Northumberland guesthouse finds new owners through Christie & Co
Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has sold The Butterchurn, a guesthouse situated in the village of Otterburn in Northumberland, to a husband and wife operator team.
Comprising eight en suite letting bedrooms, the bed & breakfast also provides a large dining room and guest lounge with a television and comfortable seating. Additionally, the property offers on site parking for up to nine vehicles and a large garden which has been well maintained and features a summerhouse.
Situated in rural Northumberland, The Butterchurn provides a picturesque setting for visitors and is well located to act as a base for tourists exploring the area, with famous sites such as Hadrian’s Wall nearby. The guesthouse is also perfectly placed to provide accommodation for wedding guests attending the popular venues in the surrounding area, including Le Petit Chateau, Otterburn Hall and Woodhill Hall.
Previous owners, Keith and Valerie Anderson had run the business for over 20 years and decided to sell in order to retire. They comment, “We are delighted to have sold our business to a couple that we feel will do a fantastic job! We wish Mark & Jane all the very best for the future. As for the sales process, the service we received from Christie & Co was excellent from the outset. We were constantly kept up to date and the team were always on hand to help where needed.”
The new owners, husband and wife team, Mark & Jane were drawn to The Butterchurn after falling in love with the village and the business and decided to purchase it as part of a lifestyle change. They comment, “We were looking for a bed and breakfast to purchase for quite some time and couldn't believe our luck when such an amazing property, The Butterchurn with its excellent reputation, came up for sale in such a beautiful part of Northumberland.
“We are already really enjoying running a B&B, and we wish we had done it 20 years ago. Christie & Co held our hand through every step of the process and constantly kept us up to date, I couldn't recommend them enough.”
David Cash, Senior Business Agent at Christie & Co handled the sale and comments, “When we took The Butterchurn to market it was always my gut feeling that the buyer would be somebody looking to fill Keith & Val’s shoes and embrace the business in its current format.
“In the wider market, we’re seeing interest from ‘lifestyle purchasers’, similar to Mark & Jane who are seeking to get out of the rat-race so to speak and enjoy a different way of life as hospitality business owners. Often, location is the key to success for this type of business and with rural Otterburn a hit with tourists and being in close proximity to popular wedding venues, there are plenty of opportunities for the business to continue to flourish.”
The Butterchurn was sold off an asking price of £425,000 for the freehold interest.
