Phat Yaks Nepalese café in Bath sold through Christie & Co
Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, is delighted to announce the sale of Nepalese café, Phat Yaks, in Bath, Somerset.
Phat Yaks specialises in authentic Nepalese food, and caters for special dietary needs such as Vegan, Gluten Free and nut free dishes. The business has a very friendly informal feel, accentuated by having stool seating in the front shop window that looks out over Bath’s bustling Kingsmead square. The business sits in a Grade II listed Georgian terraced building which has recently been the subject of internal renovation and alterations to create the popular current business concept and provide a self-contained two-bed owners flat above.
The business currently only operates during lunchtime hours, so there is huge opportunity to increase the trading hours and to develop the untapped the early morning footfall from workers and professionals passing by, as well as custom from students, shoppers and tourists throughout the day.
Kingsmead Square is a vibrant high footfall space close to the Theatre Royal and boasts a number of small independent cafés and eateries, and a fruit and vegetable market. The Square is soon to be transformed in favour of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users as Bath and North East Somerset Council are proposing to restrict vehicle access into Kingsmead Square every day, between the hours of 11am and midnight. This would increase opportunities for café culture and outdoor tables and chairs, removing all vehicles during the core hours of the day and evening.
Phat Yaks was previously owned by Mrs Sarah and Mr Sher Gurung. The couple, who have run the café since 2016 alongside a charitable organisation and another restaurant, Yak Yeti Yak, decided to sell Phat Yaks in order to free up time to focus on their charitable endeavours.
The business has been purchased by Mr Abdul Hmid who plans to reopen the store in October 2020, serving both takeaway and dine-in options. Mr Hmid comments, “I am currently finishing my refurbishment of the business premises which I hope will be ready to launch in early October. My new restaurant will be called ‘Friends’ with a burger and pizza theme.”
Nicholas Calfe, Director at Christie & Co, who handled to sale, comments, “I am delighted to have sold this business for Sarah and Sher during lockdown period and wish the new owner the best of luck in his new venture in these challenging and uncertain times.”
Phat Yaks was sold off an asking price of £65,000.
