South West garden centre market abloom, says Christie & Co
The South West garden centre market has kicked off to a strong start in 2023, driven by an uptick in new opportunities coming to market, reports business property agent and garden centre specialist, Christie & Co.
The firm’s garden centre team has been instructed to sell a number of family-run horticultural businesses in the South West of England and South Wales since the turn of the new year, most likely as sellers are looking to capitalise on the buoyant market ahead of the spring/summer period.
The three new freehold opportunities on the market through Christie & Co range from three to 17-acres in size.
Wibble Farm Nurseries is a retail plant nursery that is open to the public. The centre occupies a vast 17-acre site near Taunton, Somerset and has been in the same family ownership for two generations. With a guide price of £650,000, this business and associated land which offers scope for further development is likely to be of interest to a wide range of potential buyers.
Middlecombe Nursery near Congresbury in North Somerset is an award-winning, family-run garden centre with a popular café and superb reputation. The freehold site is roughly three-acres and has shown strong profitability in recent years. The location and position of the site give the incoming owner the benefit of a superb operational business, underpinned by the strong underlying land value.
Brynawel Garden Centre was established in 1976 and occupies a large site of approximately 4.86-acres on the outskirts of the beautiful coastal town of Penarth, near Cardiff. The centre has a strong focus on plants and offers considerable scope for new owners to develop the business and broaden the range of products and services on offer.
Tom Glanvill, Director – Garden Centres & Retail at Christie & Co, who is handling the sale of each opportunity comments, “Garden Centres are a wonderful blend of retail, leisure and hospitality. They employ vast numbers of workers and enrich the local environment in which they operate. Buyers remain attracted to the profitability of garden centres, alongside the strong underlying land value so we are anticipating strong interest in these three businesses and a busy year ahead, with several garden centre sales set to complete this year due to increased market activity.”
