Tamworth's Moat House to reopen after new operator signs deal
The lease of the iconic Moat House in Tamworth has been sold in a deal brokered by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co.
After standing empty since the end of 2014, the pub’s lease has been taken on by Martin Young, who also owns the Three Tuns public house in Fazeley, which was a finalist in both the Tamworth Business of the Year and the winner of the Enterprise Inns Midlands Community Pub of the Year in 2015.
The Moat House, located on Lichfield Street, was built by the Comberford family in 1572, and was famously visited by Charles I in 1619 during his tenure as the Prince of Wales.
Legend also has it that the Moat House has a resident ghost called Emily, a young girl who has spooked many staff and customers over the years.
The pub offers a spacious bar and restaurant, library, separate function room, extensive gardens and car parking for over 80 cars.
Martin Young commented, ““I am delighted to have taken over such a prestigious venue which I feel has significant potential. The Moat House presents a unique opportunity to provide a wonderful social hub for the people of Tamworth to enjoy. My management team and I will provide a beautiful venue which will welcome both laid back diners and those who wish to simply enjoy our range of drinks.
“We are looking forward to showing our customers an extensive range of gins, cask ales, craft beers and wines alongside a good portfolio of products many would expect to find in such a venue; along with exceptional customer service provided by our passionate team.”
Charles Jones, Business Agent at Christie & Co’s Birmingham office brokered the sale and added, “The Moat House is a fantastic property which is steeped in history and has significant potential. Martin recognised the opportunity and quickly placed an offer which suited the vendor’s needs.
“Martin has an excellent reputation for running pubs that are valued at the heart of the local community, and we’d delighted that he has taken on the Moat House with plans to operate the business as an important local asset. I expect that this site will be very successful and wish him the best of luck in his new venture.”
